Plot

Set in the 23rd century on Mars, the plot follows a murder case investigation by a couple trained as private detective Elin Ruby and her android companion Carlos Rivera. He has already filmed episodes of the TV show Lastman (2016). In 2018, producer Didier Crest contacted him and Laurent Sarfati, the creator and screenwriter of Lastman, to work on an adaptation of their series.

I was not prepared for such attention to detail and plot in this adult animated sci-fi thriller

The three laws of robotics, which are included in Asimov’s series of novels “Robots”, were even used by writers to explain the behavior and interaction of robots with people. There is a lot to like in this film, even though it may not be a genre film. Let’s start with the exquisite animation style, which is incredibly colorful, smooth and detailed throughout the film.

I think that Carlos was one of the most well written and well thought out characters. A lot of attention was paid to the creation of a futuristic environment, down to the smallest elements that give the film realism. The Mars Express needed a bit more screen time to better reveal these elements, but the Cannes Film Festival’s official selection committee doesn’t usually like overly long animation, and this was one of those films in 2023!

Overall, this was a great animated film to enjoy!
