David Kaplan: Yes
Plot
Mismatched cousins reunite for a tour of Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd couple’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history. When Benji and David visit their grandmother’s home in Poland, the setting is where Jesse Eisenberg; and his real ancestors settled in the diaspora.. Benji Kaplan: We stay in motion, we stay light, we stay agile. Benji Kaplan: The guide comes over, buys tickets, we tell him we’re going to the bathroom. David Kaplan: Bathroom.
Benji Kaplan: Yes
Benji Kaplan: Gets on the back of the train, walks to the front and looks for it. David Kaplan: I’m sorry, are we the wanderers? By the time you get to the front, the train will be at the station and we will be home free. David Kaplan: That’s fucking stupid. Tickets are probably like twelve dollars.Benji Kaplan: That’s the principle of it. We shouldn’t have to pay for train tickets in Poland.
This is our country
David Kaplan: No, it was our country. They fired us because they thought we were cheap. Featured on CBS News Sunday Morning: in his episode (2024). Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin are both good actors, and with Eisenberg’s work as both a director and a writer, I was hoping this indie dramedy would be about two cousins who go on a Jewish heritage group tour to Poland to honor their deceased grandmother . . .
The supporting characters are interesting on the surface, but thinly fleshed out
. worthy movie. While it can be fleeting and not always as deep (either thematically or narratively) as it wants to be, the film still effectively blends comedic and dramatic moments to make for a mostly worthwhile viewing experience. The film isn’t particularly dense with plot or character development (sometimes to its detriment), but the film does a good job of effectively portraying the contrasts between David (Eiseneberg) and Benji (Culkin). Stories about opposing family members are a dime a dozen in the film, but Eisenberg’s script and direction usually avoid the clichés that would otherwise arise. The script generally does a good job of mixing humorous and very serious and even tragic moments, but the writing isn’t always that deep.
This script and direction are complemented by excellent Polish cinematography and solid production values
However, its understatement is to some extent part of the film’s charm and emotional impact. For these reasons, as well as a generally moving script and story, this low-key indie dramedy is worth a watch overall. 7/1
