Four talented alien musicians are kidnapped by a record producer, who disguises them as humans and reprograms them to forget their true identities and play soulless corporate pop as The Crescendolls. At one point, a soccer match is shown on a monitor; the playing teams are Japan and France. The two collaborators, Daft Punk and Leiji Matsumoto, are French and Japanese. A remarkable film in its own way and a genuine individual case that deserves to be known among animation lovers. Director Leiji Matsumoto, who in his long anime career has been associated in one way or another with such raging epics as Space Battleship Yamato, Harlock Saga, Star Blazers & etc., worked with Daft Punk (a French two-man band specializing in electronic rock) for this unique feature. Matsumoto deliberately recreates the extreme glam style of 1970s/early 80s Japanese animation, albeit with the fluidity and detail allowed by today’s budgets and software. Matsumoto has combined image and sound to a hypnotic effect in a film that is, in fact, both unique and one-of-a-kind. unforgettable. "Digital love story" about a kidnapped techno band – who incidentally travel together in Scooby-Do, like the 'Mystery Machine' as events unfold – and an evil music impresario (echoes of the obscure Toomorrow here (1970) – anyone seen it?). Despite some pop exploits, there aren’t many depths to the story here, though there are some dark elements like the painful burial of the dead main character. But the characterization isn’t important because that wasn’t what the creators were going for, so the graphic designs and timings were left open. What makes the film so great is the peculiar hybrid of manga music that is created when the stylized visual design and editing rhythms combine with a contemporary soundtrack (the entire film is wordless outside of the lyrics) in a way that is both culturally nostalgic and strikingly modern in its impact. The resulting plastic surface completely surpasses the manga inspiration of the original pulp. In short, it’s a movie that sounds wacky, but somehow works. As an achievement, the result is miles ahead of the director’s previous, briskly produced juvenelia and should be watched.
